One Hundred Thirty-Seven Hospital Workers Answered the Call as Wainwright Tragedy Unfolded

When a training incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright on Oct. 17 left four dead and 39 injured, 137 hospital staff members flooded the local facility.

Thirty-nine injured Canadian Armed Forces members arrived at the Wainwright Health Centre on a Saturday night that would normally see fewer than twenty medical staff on duty.

Alberta Health Services detailed the mobilization that saw 137 physicians, nurses and professionals answer an urgent call as the military training tragedy unfolded on Oct. 17. Patients needing specialized care were moved onward to Edmonton and Calgary hospitals, while local teams stabilized the rest.

Military leadership visited the facility on Oct. 22 to present recognition coins and a commemorative plaque to the staff. Administrative assistant Gayle Goebel received a personal handshake of appreciation from a service member during the visit.

Our military families rely on civilian healthcare networks that stretch far beyond base perimeters when disaster strikes in rural garrisons. That thin margin between routine weekend staffing and an overwhelming emergency depends entirely on the willingness of regional staff to drop everything.

Shawn Virtue said we're proud of everyone, not just for what they accomplished that weekend.
